Paragaté: Gnosis

Paragaté is made up of four composers in collaboration to create music that is a mixture of improvisation within a defined set of rules. The rules give an underlying order – a certain group of chords, a slowly altering rhythm, a silence – which allows the improvisations to move on their currents.
The works on this album have been created over a period of 22 years; it’s a kind of “best of” album, except that this is Paragaté’s first album! The oldest piece is Hello, from 1987, which uses only heavily processed sounds, and the most recent dates from 2010, Liquid Siftings, composed with Ableton Live. Paragaté is a fluidic group – although we started performing together as a group those many years ago, we went our separate ways, but still on occasion come together to create new works. This release is a result of time passed.

Gnosis is a Greek word for knowledge; specifically knowledge the infinite and divine, a never-ending circle which never dies. Order can be created from the disorder of the world through gnosis, and the struggle to learn the pattern goes on through life, through all trials and struggles.
